St John the Evangelist

Our parish church is dedicated to St John the Evangelist. John was one of the twelve apostles, witness to many of the central events of Jesus’ life and subsequently the author (or authority for) the Fourth Gospel. John is represented by an eagle, because his Gospel carries the reader up to heaven! Traditionally John is identified with the un-named “beloved disciple” that appears throughout the Fourth Gospel. John’s work as an evangelist or teller of the good news began in Palestine and later extended to Asia Minor. Tradition holds that in his old age, when unable to do more, he was carried into the assembly of the church and there his sole exhortation was “Little children, love one another.” What more need be said! May God give us the grace to live the calling of our patron saint here in Coffs Harbour in the 21st century.
